Gregtur connects you to the history of indigenous Brazilians through remarkable experiences in the city limits.
We invite you to take a journey with us and be introduced to the visitor-friendly tribe of Tenondê Porã who are eager to show their culture, customs, colorful gatherings, and dance performances.
About 1:30 h from the center of São Paulo, live about 1.2 thousand Guarani Native Indians who preserve many of their ancient traditions and speak their own language also called “Guarani”. There are basically eight large families who share brick houses, built by the state government in their reservation.
The indigenous tribe of Tenondé Porã live in a demarcated land that covers an area of approximately 15,969 hectares and is located at the southern extreme end of the city of São Paulo.
Essentially, subsistence agriculture is practiced, which provides daily food. There are cassava, beans, corn, banana, guava, tangerine, orange and mango, which children pick up on the trees. The income comes basically from the indigenous craftsmanship sold to stores in the urban part of São Paulo as well as from government jobs.
Unlike tribes from remote north and west of Brazil that have greater visibility, urban Indians often struggle to be seen and heard due to the proximity to the largest urban areas in the country, but despite the hardships the Natives have faced in the last five centuries, they graciously allow guests to have a rare glimpse into their life and culture.
The highlight of your visit will most likely be meeting and interacting with the Guarani people. Offer them respect and dignity and they’ll reward you in return with stories about their way of life, explanations of their artifacts, hikes through trails guided by residents experiencing the diversity of Atlantic’s fauna and flora in the rainforest, watch children's choir, lectures and exhibition inside the Prayer House about Guarani customs, and sale of handicrafts. It's also included in the day activity a freshly prepared typical Guarani lunch at another indigenous village nearby. (lunch is included in the price of the tour)
In addition, bring your swimsuits along so we can jump in the lake near the village where often the Indigenous kids swim and splash around.
After having such an adventurous day, on the journey back to hotel, we’ll engage in a conversation about your interests and our expertise, whether that can be indigenous people situation in Brazil currently, the ancient dreamtime stories of the region’s earliest and original inhabitants before the Portuguese arrival, also their struggles and life during the colonial period, local bioma, or cultural history of the area.
This is a socially-conscious tour that part of your payment is reverted to the Guarani village to support their projects within the community. It is much more sincere and authentic than the typical tour and this will be real cultural immersion. You will spend the day getting to know the community, children, people and their work.
Our guides are local experts on the regions ecology and wildlife with an unparalleled passion for the Indians. Have flexibility to explore in the company of an experienced private guide who escorts you in your tour expedition, custom-tailor the tour according to your interests and provide an interpreting service along the way.
The proposed itinerary takes about 10 hours including pick-up and drop-off at your place in São Paulo or its surroundings.
